Bright Endeavors is a non-profit social enterprise of New Moms, Inc., manufacturing and marketing eco-friendly home and bath products, and commercial refill candle services to high-end event professionals. Their mission is to help adolescent parents (aged 16-25) transition into economic stability. Through its parent agency, New Moms, Inc., Bright Endeavors provides on-the-job experience to some of Chicago’s most at-risk youth.
Participants complete an 8-week, paid internship where they learn to make eco-friendly products by hand. They have the opportunity to put into place the job skills they learned in the classroom, such as practicing time management, resolving conflict, and working as a team. Practicing goal setting now comes into play with daily production goals for each participant. Various aspects of business are part of the training, including manufacturing, marketing, customer service, inventory, and customer service. Some participants even have the opportunity to design new products. Some participants with strong leadership tendencies have the option to stay and help train the next production team.
All of these activities allow participants to gain important employment skills that they can put to use in future jobs. Having some experience under their belts allows them to search for and obtain better employment opportunities as they leave the program.
