Chicago Family Support

Our Family Support program offers a wide range of options for young moms living in the community. Pregnant and parenting moms can elect to engage in any or all of these opportunities, including:

  • Doula Services
  • Prenatal Education
  • Home Visiting
  • Parenting Education

Our Home Visiting and Parenting Education coaches use the Parents as Teachers coaching and learning model to engage young moms, 24 years old and under, as their children’s first, best teachers.

Doula Services

According to national research, doula presence at birth decreases medical interventions at delivery, and reduces labor complications. Doula-supported mothers are more successful in adapting to new family dynamics, have greater breastfeeding success, have lower incidence of abuse, and lower postpartum depression rates (dona.org).

At New Moms, pregnant women can choose to partner with our Doulas as they progress from 28 weeks of pregnancy through 6 weeks post-birth, including in the labor and delivery room. Doulas support and encourage young women as they prepare for birth and early parenthood, advocate for moms through confusing and oftentimes biased healthcare systems, and coach moms about the physical, emotional, and mental stages of pregnancy, bonding, and options for breastfeeding.

Prenatal Support Group

New Moms’ prenatal support groups offer pregnant participants a positive and encouraging environment to learn about and prepare for the birth of their baby and motherhood. Prenatal support groups are open to all pregnant women ages 24 and under.

Home Visiting

Young moms who enroll in New Moms’ Family Support programs can engage with a Family Coach who visits with young moms in their homes (including in their homes at New Moms’ Housing Program apartments!) to share parenting resources, tools, child development tips, and most of allsocial connection and encouragement. Moms learn about their child’s healthy development, how to troubleshoot common parenting challenges like bedtime routines or potty training, and practice parenting techniques to enhance bonding and family well-being.

Home Visiting also includes Parent Support Group opportunities for connection with peers, facilitated discussion on childhood development, parenting, health and wellness, and parent/child bonding and development activities.

*** Families whose children are ages 0-3 have enrollment priority in Home Visiting.
