Chicago Family Support

Our Family Support programs offer a wide range of services that utilize the Parents as Teachers model, which ensures that our mothers, 24 years old and under, become their children’s first, best teachers.  Our services include:

  • Doula
  • Prenatal Education
  • Home Visiting
  • Parenting Education

Doula

Pregnant youth are encouraged to engage with a doula, supporting them from 28 weeks pregnant through 6 weeks post birth, including in the delivery room. Doulas support youth as they prepare for birth and early parenthood, and encourage breastfeeding and bonding. According to national research, doula presence at birth decreases medical interventions at delivery, and reduces labor complications. Doula-supported mothers are more successful in adapting to new family dynamics, have greater breastfeeding success, have lower incidence of abuse, and lower postpartum depression rates (dona.org).

Prenatal Support Group

Our prenatal support groups provide participants a supportive and encouraging environment to prepare for the birth of their baby and becoming a mother.  Our ongoing parent support groups are an extension of that supportive environment where participants can continue to share their struggles and victories with other young moms and receive other coaching and support from our highly trained staff.

Home Visiting

Highly trained home visitors offer parenting coaching and education as well as at-home and on-site counseling to families with a wide variety of needs. Young mothers meet with a Family Support Specialist to troubleshoot solutions to parenting concerns, learn more about their child’s healthy development, and become skilled in the best parenting techniques for their family.

Home visiting also includes parent support groups that provide an opportunity for connection with other young moms in similar circumstances. During group sessions, young moms participate in education and discussion around childhood development, health and wellness, and parent/child activities to promote healthy relationship development and parent skill building.
