Our Family Support programs offer a wide range of services that utilize the Parents as Teachers model, which ensures that our parents become their children’s first, best teachers. We provide services in: Oak Park, River Forest, Forest Park, Maywood, Cicero, Berwyn, Bellwood, and Melrose Park.
Our services include:
Pregnant youth are encouraged to engage with a doula, supporting them from 28 weeks pregnant through 6 weeks post birth, including in the delivery room. Doulas support youth as they prepare for birth and early parenthood, and encourage breastfeeding and bonding. According to national research, doula presence at birth decreases medical interventions at delivery, and reduces labor complications. Doula-supported mothers are more successful in adapting to new family dynamics, have greater breastfeeding success, have lower incidence of abuse, and lower postpartum depression rates (dona.org).
Highly trained home visitors offer parenting coaching and education at-home and on-site to families with a wide variety of needs. Families meet with a Family Support Specialist to troubleshoot solutions to parenting concerns, learn more about their child’s healthy development, and become skilled in the best parenting techniques for their family.
Home visiting also includes parent support groups that provide an opportunity for connection with parents in similar circumstances. During group sessions, parents participate in education and discussion around childhood development, health and wellness, and parent/child activities to promote healthy relationship development and parent skill building.
*** Priority for home visiting is given to families whose children are ages 0-3.
Fun and informative workshops take place at our Oak Park location every month. Workshops are free with free childcare. They cover a wide range of early childhood parenting topics.
