Nicholas Brunick

Nick believes that everyone should be able to live in a neighborhood with affordable homes, safe streets, and good schools. As a law partner at Applegate & Thorne-Thomsen, P.C., he has the opportunity to make the world more like it should be. He represents developers (both for-profit and not-for-profit) who are using a variety of financing sources to build or rehab housing, to launch new businesses, or to create institutions that are needed for healthy and competitive communities. He also represents lenders who are bringing capital to underserved communities, creating innovative loan funds, and providing financing for affordable housing and small businesses. In addition to structuring creative real estate projects, Nick enjoys serving as general counsel to a number of community development corporations (CDCs), housing developers, and CDFI lenders advising them on broader strategic and corporate issues.

When not spending time with his family or coaching his kids in sports, Nick is active on a number of civic and not-for-profit boards focused on advocating and organizing for affordable housing, economic development, and equal opportunity. Over the past seven years, he has especially enjoyed his involvement through his parish – Ascension Parish in Oak Park — with United Power for Action and Justice (UPAJ) on the Reclaiming Communities initiative which is an initiative to build or rehab 1000 homes on the South Side and 1000 homes on the West Side of Chicago.

Nick graduated from North Central College summa cum laude and received his law degree from University of Texas School of Law. He also holds a Masters of Public Affairs from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas.

Why I Joined…

“I joined New Moms’ Board of Directors in 2021 because I believe deeply in the mission of New Moms for a number of reasons. One, I grew up in a loving family and in a community with access to good opportunities, and today I am blessed to be married with a family of my own (three daughters and one son) and living in Oak Park. I want to support New Moms’ efforts to assist and create opportunities for young families to thrive. Two, I want to act on my faith values and New Moms creates an opportunity for me to do so. Three, I have spent many years (in both my professional and civic lives) engaged in efforts to address issues of poverty, economic development, housing, education, and equal opportunity. I think New Moms is doing great work in these spaces and I value the chance to contribute to New Moms mission.”

Favorite Quote…

“Invoked or not invoked, God is always present.”

“I like this quote because it reminds me that no matter what is happening in our world, God’s love is always present and we can always choose to spread that love and to make our world more like it should be.”
