New Moms believes in the strength, skills, and potential of young moms.

Parenting is hard. Parenting without a stable home, financial security, or community support is even harder. New Moms exists so young moms do not have to do it alone. Our impact is multi-generational, exponential, and beautiful.
For 40 years, New Moms has invested in the beauty and power of being a mother.

Our History

In 1983, our founder, Ellen Kogstad, saw a need in her neighborhood — young moms lacking the support of their communities. From there, she took action, starting with the simple act of gathering and distributing diapers and formula from the trunk of her car. Within five years, New Moms outgrew the small church where it began, incorporating and adding a housing service, creating the first housing program for young mothers in Chicago. Four decades later, New Moms has expanded to support young families throughout Chicagoland beyond Housing, including Job Training, and Family Support, and Academic Coaching programs. These programs are designed specifically for young moms, with their input and goals in mind.

Our leadership team believes in the strength, skills, and potential of young moms – and demonstrate that commitment through their work every day.

Board of Directors

From across industries and experiences, we are thrilled to benefit from the leadership and insight of our talented Board of Directors.

Associate Board

The Associate Board is composed of a group of emerging leaders who dedicate their own time, talents, networks, and resources to raise awareness and support the mission of New Moms. As an ambassador for the organization, each Associate Board member must express and demonstrate a commitment to the mission and vision of New Moms. Applications open in May.

Alumni Advisory Council

Our Alumni Advisory Council is a group of amazing young moms who have completed a New Moms program. The Alumni Advisors are committed to sharing their experience and wisdom as young parents to improve our programming for future families.

Annual Report

New Moms is thrilled to share highlights of how our mission played out in the past fiscal year with our FY23 Annual Report. We partner with determined young moms to support their efforts toward building strong families, finding safe and stable homes, pursuing family-sustaining jobs, and paving paths to lasting success.

Between July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023 we saw young families take powerful first steps toward bright futures, and we hope that as you read this report you will get a beautiful look into what that means.
