De’Avioun Is Building a Future With Purpose

When De’Avioun found New Moms, she was pregnant and unsure of what her future would look like.
She was navigating an unstable housing situation without a large support system at home. Looking for resources, she searched online for mom programs near her and found New Moms. Nervous but determined, she walked into the Oak Park location ready to find support.
What she found was more than a list of resources. She found a community.
At New Moms, De’Avioun connected with people who saw her potential, supported her goals, and believed in what she could accomplish. Through the College Success program, she received encouragement and accountability as she continued her education. She also participated in Family Support and Mental Health services, including child-parent therapy with her daughter, Elena.
“The resources that were available really helped me get to where I am. It really has been a big part of my life.”
That support helped De’Avioun navigate the many demands of parenting, housing, and returning to school. Along the way, she built confidence, learned strategies to manage stress, and became more organized.
But one of the most important things she learned was that she did not have to do it all alone.

Finding Her Strength
For De’Avioun, the support she received at New Moms helped her recognize her own abilities.
“New Moms gives me the resources. They give me the education, the tools to be educated,” she said. “Since I’ve been here, I see that I am more than capable of being a mom.”
Today, De’Avioun is pursuing her associate degree with plans to transfer and study architecture. Her long-term goal is to become a licensed architect and use her work to support communities, particularly people who have experienced homelessness and unstable housing.
Her own experiences have shaped the way she thinks about architecture. She wants to help create spaces where people feel supported, welcomed, and like they truly have a place to belong.
“I hope to work with some of you guys in the architecture, construction, and engineering fields someday,” she said. “It would mean the world to me to work with people who are supporting New Moms.”

Building a Future for Her Family
De’Avioun is building a future with purpose, not only for herself but for her daughter.
She hopes Elenisse grows up confident, curious, and supported, knowing that her mom pursued her dreams while working to create a different future for them both.
Her journey is a reminder of what can happen when a young mom has access to the support, tools, and relationships she needs to move forward.
“I know that I can do this,” De’Avioun said. “I am more than capable of being a mom.”
