When Aniah was five months pregnant, she was unemployed and unsure what the future would hold. She learned about New Moms through her sister, who saw the organization on social media. At the time, Aniah says she felt like she was “at rock bottom” with “no other resources” and no idea what the future would look like for her or her unborn child.
Taking a leap of faith brought her into New Moms’ workforce development program, where she completed job training. Through training at Bright Endeavors, New Moms’ social enterprise candle company, Aniah built skills in communication, organization, teamwork, and professionalism. “It kind of shaped me into the person I am today,” she says. “New Moms helped me possess [the skill] of being able to go through things in the real world and come to work and let work be work.”
But for Aniah, Job Training became more than a path to employment. It became her entry point into a broader support network. “Workforce development is what got me into the doorway of New Moms,” she says. From there, she connected with housing, counseling, family support, and other resources. Her experience shows how one opportunity can lead to many more—and how a holistic approach can help young moms address the many challenges that can stand between them and long-term stability.
Aniah also found a workplace that understood that life doesn’t stop when you walk through the door. Reflecting on a particularly difficult day, she remembers how her coach and the New Moms team responded with care rather than judgment. “This is not just a job. This is to prepare you for life itself,” she says. “They actually care about you. They actually want you to do good.”
Today, New Moms’ Job Training program gives young moms ages 18–24 a fully paid, 16-week workforce development experience at Bright Endeavors, combining hands-on training with classroom learning and individualized coaching. Participants build technical and life skills while receiving support to pursue employment and greater economic stability.
For Aniah, the impact went beyond a paycheck. “They gave me courage. They gave me a voice… They gave me hope,” she says. Her story is a powerful reminder that when a young mom has access to opportunity, support, and someone who believes in her, one step forward can open the door to many more.
Aniah’s story shows what can happen when young moms have access to the resources, opportunities, and support they need to build a stronger future. Through paid job training, individualized coaching, and connections to other New Moms programs, young moms can move from uncertainty toward greater stability and opportunity. For Aniah, one step through the door led to many more—and a pathway toward a stronger future for herself and her family.
