When Dezyiah became a mom at 20 years old, she wanted what every parent wants—a safe, stable place where her daughter could grow and thrive. Instead, she found herself living in a crowded three-bedroom apartment with multiple family members. She and her newborn daughter slept in the living room without privacy, where people came and went throughout the day. “We stayed in the living room. That was our space,” she recalled. The constant stress made it difficult to focus on anything beyond making it through each day.
Everything changed when Dezyiah moved into New Moms housing. For the first time, she and her daughter had a place of their own. “Me and my baby finally got our own space,” she said. “It’s been so peaceful.” With a stable home, personalized housing and financial coaching, and a community of other young moms, Dezyiah was able to focus on building her future. Today, she works with Chicago Public Schools, continues to pursue her goals, and is creating the stable childhood she wants for her daughter.
At New Moms, housing is more than providing an apartment—it’s creating the foundation for lasting stability. Through transitional and permanent supportive housing, one-on-one coaching, and a supportive community, young moms gain the security they need to pursue education, employment, and healthy family relationships. As Dezyiah shared, “I don’t know where I’d be without New Moms.” When families have a safe place to call home, they have the opportunity to build brighter futures.
