JULY 1, 2023 – JUNE 30, 2024

It is with deep pride that I welcome you to look back on the past year — my 10th year leading New Moms! We enter each year setting audacious goals for how we can partner with young moms and help them become the women and moms they aspire to be. Each year they blow me away — surpassing goals and expectations in powerful and inspirational ways.

We meet our young moms in some of the most difficult circumstances — experiencing homelessness, fleeing family violence, struggling with mental health, navigating complexities of poverty, or entangled in the justice system — and yet, we see amazing possibilities in each young mom. We believe in the beauty and power of being a mother, and we walk alongside her to help unveil her potential and realize her strengths.

It takes a community to make this possible. My deepest gratitude to the passionate and committed staff of New Moms — the impact you are having in the lives of young families is immeasurable. To our Board of Directors and Associate Board, your leadership is invaluable. And to all who support through donations, time, and prayer, thank you for fueling our mission and making thriving futures possible!

With gratitude,

Laura Zumdahl, Ph.D.
President & CEO

Strength is in Community

Olivia Soja, Project Manager at the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, knows just how critical it is for a mom in the justice system to have empathy and support during her pregnancy.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office saw a need for mothers in the justice system to have adequate resources while pregnant. In 2019, they launched the Healthy Moms & Babies initiative in partnership with Start Early, pairing incarcerated mothers with doula and home visiting services to help reduce stressful birthing environments. This also started a connection with the Sheriff’s Office and New Moms’ Birth Doula services under our Family Support Program.

“Being in custody is not a great place for a pregnant woman,” Olivia explained. “We try to provide advocacy with the courts for release of pregnant women when it is appropriate.”

A high-stress event like being incarcerated can create more barriers for a pregnant mom. This partnership allows New Moms doulas to partner with young moms in the justice system and help to ease stress by creating space for a dignified, supportive birthing experience.

New Moms doulas provide prenatal and postnatal home visits to moms in their home or in jail, attend doctor’s appointments, as well as labor and delivery, to help advocate for young moms. Doulas see the importance of normalizing care for incarcerated moms because support in those early stages of parenting helps her build confidence as she advocates for herself and her baby.

“Moms navigate pregnancy and parenting while facing numerous challenges, particularly in relation to the criminal justice system. Helping boost their confidence and self-advocacy can lead to better outcomes for both mom and baby,” Katie Wise, New Moms Director of Family Support said.

Young moms who are introduced to New Moms through the Sheriff’s Office are enrolled in the Family Support program and may also access our other programs including Housing and Job Training, gaining additional support.

“We’ve had some crossover with doulas and participants. Some have reached out and utilized the Housing program at New Moms, and it’s been an absolute lifesaver,” Olivia said. “There have been a few scenarios where a mom has been released and doesn’t have anywhere to go. The partnership that we have with New Moms has benefited a lot of moms that I meet in custody, and that’s always the goal—to help people who are leaving here find success.”

In the fall of 2023, New Moms added mental wellness services as a resource to young moms in our programs. Incorporating these services in-house at New Moms helps to remove barriers for young moms and allows them to access clinical therapists who have a unique understanding of their specific needs related to trauma and parenting.

Aasta Ziegler, our Director of Clinical Services, shared that this new expansion allows New Moms to help set young moms up for long-lasting success and goal setting.

“It’s hard to get and keep a job, keep an apartment, and raise your family if you are having trouble coping with stress,” Aasta said. “The moms in our program have the skills and potential to thrive and achieve their goals. Our role in mental wellness is to partner, support, and walk with people on their journey. We help them figure out their barriers and strengths, and provide intentional time and space to focus on that.”

With generous funding from Cook County Health’s Stronger Together initiative, we have hired a specialized child and parent therapist, expanding our team to three full-time clinical therapists, and are providing training to all of our therapists in evidence-based approaches to trauma, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Ingrid Fowler-Wrather became a young mom in 1998 and sought additional support from New Moms. Since then, the organization has significantly grown, now offering more comprehensive programming.

“I’m really impressed at the leaps and bounds that New Moms has grown,” Ingrid said. “The fact that they’ve added mental health as a new component of their services is just mind blowing, because I think it took too long for people to realize that (mental health) is really a key part of helping people to evolve and to move forward.”

Currently, Ingrid is pursuing a Master’s in Healthcare Administration, and works as a Senior Community Engagement Coordinator at the Mesulam Center for Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer’s disease at Northwestern University. She also serves on the New Moms Associate Board. Her three children, Kae (26), Kahlyl (24), Kaleb (22), are now all grown up and are in their own professional careers.

A resident of the Chicago neighborhood Humboldt Park, Ingrid reflects on the vital role that New Moms plays in empowering young mothers. “Without programs like New Moms, many in my demographic wouldn’t have the opportunities I’ve had,” Ingrid said.

Our team at New Moms is a special one. While our roles are different, we all wish for the same outcome for our young moms: success.

Valerie Matthews’ journey as a New Moms academic coach began in October 2022, driven by a desire for meaningful work and a passion for change. “God put me in this place at the right time,” she said. Her objective is clear: to guide young moms in the College Success program through the challenges of education while balancing their responsibilities as parents.

Currently, only 8% of single-mother students in Illinois complete an Associate degree within six years, compared to 60% of students without children, according to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research.

The New Moms College Success program provides essential support to young moms between the ages of 18 and 24 as these women pursue their associate and bachelor’s degrees.

Many participants are enrolled at City Colleges of Chicago, with nursing as a popular major across the College Success program. Valerie also supports those interested in education and architecture, helping them navigate their academic paths. “This program helps moms find stability and equips them with the skills to build successful lives,” she said.

In 2021, Janet, a College Success participant, set her sights on pursuing a nursing degree from Malcolm X College. A deep calling to make a difference coupled with her family’s medical field background drew her closer to her career aspirations.

“New Moms has helped me be a better parent and student,” Janet said. “Valerie has always been my rock. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t even think of being a student and being closer to my career goal.”

Janet cherishes the small moments that strengthen her connection with her daughter.

After Janet earns her Associate’s degree in General Studies next spring, she plans to pursue her Bachelor’s in Nursing.

Valerie celebrates each success story as a testament to our young mom’s hard work and resilience.

“When I hear them say ‘I did it,’ that’s music to my ears,” Valerie said.

In a program rooted in resilience and determination, Valerie and the New Moms College Success program are paving the way for multigenerational change.

As Jackson’s Corporate Philanthropy Manager, Rylee Murray, manages all corporate giving at Jackson National Life Insurance’s Chicago office. Jackson has awarded funding to New Moms since 2019, and saw an opportunity to deepen their relationship during their Summer of Service through the Bright Endeavors Corporate Experience

“We want to have a deep, impactful relationship [with New Moms] and the Bright Endeavors Corporate Experience is a really nice entry point,” Rylee said. “It’s been so wonderful getting to know the young moms in the job training cohorts.”

The Jackson team participated in five Bright Endeavors Corporate Experiences, during which they were led by New Moms’ Job Training participants through the candle making process while learning how executive skills like organization, time management, emotional control, and goal-directed persistence need to be employed to be successful. The Jackson teams were invited to share words of wisdom to the young moms just beginning their professional careers, purchase Bright Endeavors candles to support the New Moms Job Training program, and consider how to further partner in support of our mission.

This partnership between Jackson and New Moms continues to strengthen, resulting in a mutually beneficial relationship that helps to bridge the gap between corporate resources and community needs.

Olivia Baldwin has lent a helping hand at New Moms since 2014. Her volunteer journey began when she was a sophomore in high school.  Her heart for our mission to partner with young moms and strengthen families grew, so in 2019 she continued her commitment to service and became a regular volunteer.

“Community means people helping people, and it’s an important source of support,” Olivia said.

From being a weekly childcare volunteer during our Parent Support group activities, to helping out at New Moms’ Operation Santa, Olivia’s service to New Moms helps to make our young moms feel comfortable and supported.

“Being able to take kids off of the parents’ hands for just a small amount of time feels like I’m making a bit of a difference,” Olivia said. “Volunteering brings people together to accomplish a goal without expecting something in return, and that can make a profound impact on that community.”

We want to thank Olivia and all of our New Moms volunteers for going above and beyond to show up for moms in our community!

New Moms’ Job Training Program has been thrilled to develop a partnership with the CVS Health Workforce Initiative in Chicago, allowing us to add a career pathway track into the health sector.

Throughout New Moms’ 16-week paid Job Training Program at our social enterprise, Bright Endeavors, young moms can identify a career path of choice: Health, Information Technology, or Manufacturing. Through our partnership with CVS Health, young moms who select the health career pathway engage in a dual track program that includes retail leadership and pharmacy technician training. Many have acquired jobs as pharmacy technicians and have found the transferable skills they developed at New Moms to be a tremendous asset to their success and confidence as they continue to develop their careers in the healthcare industry.

On a lovely evening in April, over 400 guests attended the New Moms Sneaker Ball at the Bridgeport Art Center to support our mission and champion young moms in our programs. Guests showed off their cool “kicks” while having a powerful impact on the lives of young moms in Chicago.

Thanks to this community of support, we raised over $367,000 to help fuel our mission. The evening included a candle-making demonstration from our social enterprise, Bright Endeavors, a powerful and lively stepping routine from the Downers Grove South Steppers, and the presentation of stories of young moms impacted by New Moms. We hope you can join us at this meaningful event in 2025!

New Moms was the proud recipient of the 2024 Social Impact Award from the Baumhart Center for Social Enterprise and Responsibility, Loyola University Chicago. The award highlights the work that New Moms is doing to share our innovative, strengths-based model with human services organizations across the nation through our social enterprise called The Hub @ New Moms. Launched in 2022, The Hub @ New Moms provides executive skills training and consulting, and is working to transform the human services sector to fulfill New Moms’ ultimate vision to see every young family thrive. Thank you to the Baumhart Center for recognizing the value of shifting mindsets throughout the human services sector to support families in accomplishing their goals.

In May, New Moms was awarded $100,000 from Impact Grants Chicago, an impressive collective impact group of over 400 women from across Chicago who are committed to addressing the challenges facing our city. New Moms was selected from 135 original grant applicants. We are grateful to Impact Grants Chicago for recognizing the importance of New Moms’ critical mission and making a significant investment to help us continue to be a trusted resource to young moms and their children.

The Hub @ New Moms continues to extend New Moms’ impact beyond Chicago through our training and consultation services. Over this last year, The Hub has worked with 16 human service organizations across the nation, and has trained over 500 practitioners on our Executive Skills Coaching model.

This past year we provided consultation services to diverse organizations such as:

  • Community LINC (housing provider in Kansas City)
  • National Community Action Partnership (and their nationwide network of community action agencies, with focus on their Whole Family Approach)
  • REDF (providing Executive Skills Coaching training for Employment Social Enterprises)
  • Planned Parenthood of Illinois (providing Executive Skills Coaching training for their Senior Directors, to better support their staff in workplace goal pursuits)

These organizations are committed to seeing families thrive and are doing the work that it takes to shift mindsets from deficit-oriented to strengths-based, empowering people to accomplish goals. Learn more about The Hub @ New Moms here.

In July 2023, the New Moms Transformation Center in the Austin neighborhood experienced extreme flooding, caused by an external electrical fire, followed by a complete systems failure throughout the entire building.

The damage was severe, making the building uninhabitable for over one month, and displacing our moms and children living in the 40 apartment units at the Transformation Center. Our incredible New Moms team worked tirelessly to support families whom we temporarily housed in hotels, and our community of support showed up in powerful ways.

The costs incurred by this crisis exceeded $800,000, but through the generosity of donors and foundations, and an eventual insurance payout, we are thankful to celebrate that New Moms was made whole. The immediate response of generosity made it possible for New Moms to continue serving families and limited the negative impact of the damage across the organization. Thank you!

M. Hampton knows the importance of giving grace to yourself when you’re faced with hardship.

Before she found New Moms, M. Hampton experienced the tragic loss of her fiance. New Moms provided her with housing stability and the space to build a secure future for herself and her children. “New Moms gave me grace to figure myself out,” M. Hampton said. “They’re giving me a chance to get real-world experience by paying rent, but I also get space just in case I fall down.”

The stability of her new apartment at New Moms allowed her to focus not only on survival and her young kids, but on her aspirations. “When God wakes me up, I know I have stuff to do,” M. Hampton said. “Since my fiance passed I felt behind and I wanted to accomplish a lot all at once. New Moms taught me a lot about time management and how to slow down.”

With each passing day M. Hampton has become more confident. After getting a degree in culinary arts, she started a cooking business. Once she moves into permanent housing, she plans to take her business to the next level.  M. Hampton is also part of the New Moms and i.c. stars tech pathways training program which will help her unlock new pathways to a career in technology. This experience has helped M. Hampton to share the load and learn to lean on others for support and guidance.
